Just don't be a boob

I just spent a couple of hours watching a special on "boobgate" - The revealing of Janet Jackson's breast during the 2004 Superbowl.

I remember when it all went down and even then, I couldn't understand what all the fuss was about. It's a BOOB. A breast. A body part. We are inundated by sexual imagery in advertising, let alone music, movies and art, all the time! Why did everyone suddenly take exception to this?

She was vilified and mocked for years after that yet Justin, with a wink, cheeky smile and pat on the shoulder, went on to futher his career.

In my opinion, this was not even anything that warranted more than a paragraph of hurrumphness - if that was how you felt.

In the scheme of what we see every day, it barely would raise an eyebrow but it seemed the people with the loudest voices chose to make this a despicable act and Janet was made the scapegoat.

How did we allow this to happen?

Hubby and I were watching "And just like that" the other night when without warning, full male nudity appeared on screen.

Yes, I'm saying we could see his penis in full swing.

Hubby was aghast and I'm not blaming him for this reaction. It would be the reaction of most males. It's the way our society has been led to think (led mostly by males)

I turned to him and said, "Why is that offensive to you? Women have had their bodies exposed in television and movies for decades. The male body is NOT sacred!"

Seriously, again, it's a body part. About 50% of our population has one.

What is the fear if we start seeing male nudity?

Why is female nudity okay but male nudity so taboo?

We have the internet. We can see whatever we like, whenever we like so people should just ease up and stop sexualising things.

This is the crux of the matter. Yes, if you sexualise things, it may be inappropriate depending on what and when something is being said or shown, but a boob? Seen for a few seconds? I don't even have too look for it and I could see provacative breasts in the next few ads that come up uninvited onto my screen

I was just getting so angry while watching that Janet Jackson special and thinking about how awful all of that was for her at the time and we all went along with it.

Shame on us.

How about this? The next time you want to tear someone down for doing something you think is wrong, how perfect are you?
